Talking about porn

Our CEO, Vicki Shotbolt, spoke on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour to discuss the latest amendments made to the Digital Economy Bill in relation to online pornography.

The legislation states that online porn sites must have age-verification systems in place in order to prevent children from accessing their content. Vicki, with host Jenni Murray, discussed the significance of this and what she believed the true impact of the bill will be.

Vicki stated that although the legislation will ‘do something’ it ‘certainly won’t stop young people from seeing pornography full stop.’ While the bill addresses the fact that some content should not be made available to children, it won’t necessarily prevent them from viewing it. As well as this, the legislation won’t help children understand that certain things they may see online are ‘not a healthy reflection of what really happens in life.’

To help tackle this issue, Vicki said that effective SRE and parental support were key, and that parents should talk to their children about recognising healthy relationships in order to challenge any pornographic content they may be exposed to.
