Instagram unveils new tool to combat trolls

Abusive Instagram posts will be automatically hidden from the social network following the release of a new tool that blocks offensive words and comments.
Available to all users from today, the new tool lets users add keywords, phrases and emojis to a customer list that they consider offensive and asks Instagram to automatically block comments containing them. The comments will be hidden from those users’ posts so that neither the account nor members of the public can see them.
In releasing it to the wider public, Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom, said on his blog that the tool was the first feature that the social network was introducing to keep Instagram ‘a safe place for self-expression’.
He added: ‘My commitment to you is that we will keep building features that safeguard the community and maintain what makes Instagram a positive and creative place for everyone.’
How to access Instagram’s new safety tool
To access the tool, users must visit their Instagram profile and click on the wheel button for iOS or the three dotted Android sign at the top right hand corner of the page. Next, tap on Comments and turn on the Hide Inappropriate Comments button to filter comments using a default list of key words, or enter specific customer keywords in the Customer Keyword box provided. When you are finished remember to tap Done.
