TikTok unveils new education push

TikTok is planning to introduce a wave of educational content from educators and experts on its platform, as part of the new #LearnOnTikTok campaign.

Although the social media app is already famous for its DIY and ‘life hack’ videos, it has announced that it will invest €13m (£11.7m) towards “seeding a whole ecosystem of educational content”.

In a press release, the company said: “We want people to turn to TikTok not just for entertainment, but to learn something new, to acquire a new skill, or simply get inspired to do something they've never done before.

“People are already doing this, and it's a trend we want to get behind and accelerate.”

TikTok, which has around 800m active users worldwide, is especially popular with young people – it has become a hub for ‘Gen Z’ culture and a way for them to stay connected from home during lockdown.

It’s not clear when the new campaign will launch but the company has already partnered with several organisations, educators and experts, who will produce a range of content on everything from science and maths to cooking and soap making.

Among the people who have already signed up are the British actor Sean Sagar and the Channel 4 presenter Rachel Riley.

The company said: “From life hacks to science tutorials, motivational tips to quick cooks – we want to help people access learning that is personal, local and specific to their everyday lives in the easiest and simplest way possible.

“We hope our users will continue to share their talents with the world on TikTok, showing that entertainment and learning can come together through short-form content.”
