How to set good digital rules that actually work

Having clear and consistent rules around screens gives your child freedom online and you more peace of mind.

It’s not about control. Instead, it’s a crucial step in helping your child use screens positively and independently.

Start simple

The best digital rules are easy to follow. Instead of long lists, focus on the things that matter most. A good starting point might be when, where and how devices are used. A good rule might be no screens at bedtime or limits on gaming sessions.

Keeping things straightforward helps everyone remember what’s expected.

Make it a team effort

Children are generally more likely to respect boundaries they have helped create.

So when creating rules for your child, listen to their opinions, as they will tell you what feels fair. Involving them builds trust and responsibility for the choices they make online.

You can always adjust if something isn’t working.

Lead by example

If you scroll through dinner, your child will want to as well. Setting boundaries means sticking to them yourself.

Children learn more from what they see than what they are told, so showing self-control teaches it far more effectively than talking about it.

You don’t have to be anti-tech, just mindful. Showing that screens can be set aside is more powerful than any rule.

Review and refresh

Tech changes fast, and so do children. What worked last year might feel out of touch now. Be open to negotiation and make sure you occasionally discuss how your rules are going – even if it is to praise them for sticking to them.

This will show your child that boundaries can be flexible. Drop what’s no longer useful, keep what works, and be open to change. It keeps rules relevant and reduces pushback.
