The Tech Shock podcast – the 'wicked problem' of child financial harms
“There’s a growing concern about the normalisation of harmful and risky financial behaviours online [...] all those factors, all those trends are going to make this a really hard problem to solve.”
Our 2023 report found that those aged 13-18 spend over £50m per week when online.
This economic independence, however, means that young people are increasingly at risk of finance-related harms; things like scams, influencer marketing, and criminal exploitation.
The term ‘child financial harms’ describes damaging experiences that have money as a component. With funding from Nominet, last year we established a consortium to help understand and tackle this issue.
In this episode, Maya Daver-Massion and Zixuan Fu – part of the security and online safety team at PUBLIC – join us to look at child financial harms in more detail, discuss why they are overlooked, and consider the possible impact of emerging technology.
