“It’s not about scaring parents – it’s about empowering them”

How one teacher is using our Everyday Digital programme to reframe online safety

Dan Veal, a computing lead at Brickhill Primary School has a clear vision. He wants to help young people and parents embrace the positive power of digital technology, while equipping them to avoid the pitfalls.

As a trained Everyday Digital practitioner, Dan is using the programme to shift the conversation from fear to confidence.

When asked what motivated him to get involved, he said he was inspired by the tech-positive message.

“There’s a lot out there focused on shock and scare tactics,” he says. “But Everyday Digital is different – it’s engaging, practical and optimistic.”

A place for parents

At Dan’s school, the Everyday Digital widget sits right on the homepage – a go-to for parents with questions about digital life.

Recently, the school hosted a digital safety session with a local police officer – which drew 30 parents. But it was Everyday Digital’s positive messaging and practical tools that kept the conversation going after the session.

“The police session was effective, but intense. Everyday Digital helped soften it – giving parents hopeful, constructive steps.”

Life as a Local Champion

Dan's school now shares Everyday Digital updates fortnightly to avoid overwhelming families, while offering tailored resources to reluctant parents. For example, a parent unsure about TikTok alternatives who responded positively to a resource on YouTube Kids.

In staff meetings, Dan has also used Everyday Digital to boost teachers' understanding of digital literacy, sparking new conversations about technology in the classroom – especially among colleagues who were previously wary of tech.

“This programme isn’t just about digital safety. It’s about empowering families, shifting mindsets, and showing that tech can be a force for good.”
