Life360

From helping families stay coordinated to providing peace of mind as teenagers take their first steps towards independence, Life360 has become one of the most popular family safety apps in the world.

What is Life360?

Available as a mobile app on iOS and Android, Life360 allows family members to stay aware of each other’s whereabouts in real-time. To begin using it, families download the app and set up a private group known as a ‘Circle’. Once a child or teenager joins the Circle via a secure invite code, their live location is displayed on a private digital map accessible only to other members of that group.

While the app can be used entirely for free with adverts, paid premium subscriptions unlock a longer history log, roadside assistance, and advanced crash detection. Beyond location tracking, Life360 includes built-in group messaging, making it a centralized hub for daily family communication.

Why is it so popular?

As children grow up, milestones like walking home from school alone, meeting friends without a lift, or getting a driving licence bring exciting new freedoms—alongside a fair amount of parental anxiety. Life360 is highly popular because it acts as a digital safety net, making that transition to independence feel manageable for both parents and children.

The app includes several automated features that eliminate the need for low-level worry or constant "Are you there yet?" text messages. It allows young people to build autonomy while remaining connected to family support, making it an easy-to-use tool for everyday logistics and peace of mind.

What do parents need to be aware of?

Place Alerts. These can be set up around key boundaries (geofences) like home, school, or after-school clubs, sending an automatic notification to your phone when a family member arrives or leaves, which cuts down on check-in texts.

Driving Reports. For parents of older teens who have just started driving, the app tracks speed, rapid acceleration, hard braking, and phone usage while on the move, encouraging safer habits behind the wheel.

SOS Alerts. Life360 features an emergency SOS button. If a child ever feels unsafe or finds themselves in trouble, a single tap sends an instant alert with their coordinates to all members of their Circle (and, on certain premium plans, can notify emergency services).

Surveillance vs connection. One of the main challenges families face is finding the line between protective parenting and over-monitoring. If a child feels they are being constantly tracked or distrusted, it can harm the parent-child relationship. Life360 works best when it is framed not as a tool for surveillance, but as a mutual connection feature (remember, your child can see your location too!). It should be set up openly after a collaborative conversation.

Privacy controls and ‘Bubbles’. To give older children and teenagers a sense of autonomy while staying safe, Life360 includes a feature called ‘Bubbles’. A Circle member can activate a temporary Bubble that obscures their exact location on the map, showing only a broad, approximate area for a set period. Crucially, core safety features—such as crash detection and messaging—remain fully active. If an emergency or a car crash is detected, the Bubble instantly bursts, sharing the exact location with the rest of the Circle.

Data privacy. Because Life360 relies heavily on tracking and logging highly sensitive, real-time location data, data privacy is a major consideration. The app has previously faced scrutiny regarding how user data and location history are handled or shared with third-party partners for tailored advertising and research. Parents should take the time to look through the app’s privacy settings together with their children.
