Teaching online safety in a changing digital world

How Be Internet Legends helps primary schools

The digital landscape for children is changing faster than ever. For educators, keeping up with this and statutory online safety requirements, while finding high-quality, affordable evidence-based resources, is the challenge.

That is where Be Internet Legends national assemblies come in.

Created by Google and Parent Zone, the free, interactive sessions are designed to turn online safety from a "don't do this" lecture into an empowering skills and behaviours-focused experience.

Supporting Statutory Requirements

For teachers, DSLs and Senior Leadership Teams, these assemblies aren't just a chance for a quiet 30 minutes. They are a powerful tool for meeting statutory online safety education requirements.

In the DfE’s Relationships Education and Computing curricula, schools are mandated to teach children how to navigate the internet safely and respectfully.

The Be Internet Legends programme maps directly to these frameworks by:

  1. Promoting Critical Evaluation: Teaching pupils that not everything they see online is true.
  2. Developing Healthy Relationships: Focusing on the "Kind" pillar to foster respectful online interactions.
  3. Enhancing Personal Safety: Equipping students with the "Secure" and "Alert" skills needed to recognize risks and protect their identity.

A 2026 assembly roadmap

Be Internet Legends assemblies are constantly refreshed to meet the changing digital landscape head-on.

The 2026 calendar of assemblies explores a range of key themes:

Tuesday 17 March – Media Literacy & Critical Thinking

The Safer Online Explorers assembly helps children spot misleading information and "think before they click" in high-pressure online environments.

Tuesday 12 May – Wellbeing

The Wellbeing assembly focuses on how being online makes you feel – and teaches children to moderate screen use to make sure they find a better balance.

Thursday 18 June – AI

The AI assembly is all about demystifying technology that is reshaping the world – helping children to recognise its possibilities and imitations.

Tuesday 8 September - Citizenship

The Back To School assembly uses the Legends code to help children think about empathy and positive citizenship online and how to respect their peers.

Friday 13 November – Celebrating Online Safety

Be Internet Legends Day is our annual celebration event, where we celebrate kinder, more positive behaviour online with some special awards.

Why it works in the classroom

The beauty of these assemblies lies in their interactivity.

They feature live challenges and games that keep KS2 pupils gripped – hosted by our expert team of trainers. The programme has reached over 10 million children and – by joining a national stream – students feel part of a massive, UK-wide community.

Assemblies provide a ready-made focal point for PSHE or Computing planning. They offer a shared language for staff and students alike, ensuring that safeguarding isn't just a policy in a folder, but a lived culture within a school.
